Trace Precedents in Google Sheets
ProWindows
Ctrl+Shift+[
Mac
⌘+Shift+[
When you inherit a model, the first question about any formula is: where do these numbers come from? Excel answers with Trace Precedents. Google Sheets has nothing built in — you’re left reading formulas character by character.
XLKeys adds true formula auditing to Sheets. Select a formula cell, press Ctrl + Shift + [, and every input cell lights up — including precedents on other sheets. Step backwards through a model in seconds.
Excel vs. Google Sheets vs. XLKeys
| Where | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Excel | Ctrl+[ (select precedents) / Trace Precedents arrows |
| Google Sheets (native) | No keyboard shortcut |
| Google Sheets + XLKeys | Ctrl+Shift+[ |
Google Sheets has no formula auditing tools at all — no trace precedents, no trace dependents.
How to use it
- Select a cell containing a formula.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + [ (⌘ + Shift + [ on Mac).
- Every cell the formula references is highlighted, on this sheet and others.
- Use Alt → G → B to jump back to where you started.
